Monument Peak is a stunning hike located in the Laguna Mountains of Southern California. This trail offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, and is an excellent choice for hikers of all skill levels. The hike is approximately 8 miles long and can be completed in about 3-4 hours.
We started our hike with the side of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). The PCT is a long-distance hiking trail that stretches from Mexico to Canada. The section of the PCT that runs through the Laguna Mountains is particularly scenic, and offers some of the best views on the entire hike.
After hiking on the PCT for a bit, you will come to a junction that leads to Monument Peak. If you actually don't miss it (like we did), this part of the hike is a bit more challenging, as it involves a steep climb up to the summit. However, the views from the top are well worth the effort - we think? On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Pacific Ocean.
Back on the PCT you can reach a couple more beautiful overlooks, one of them Foster Point.
Continuing on the trail, before you hit the Big Laguna Trail, you actually have to find an almost hidden trail that ends up going through bushes for probably half a mile to mile. However, once you make it through, you get to Big Laguna Trail, which takes you through a beautiful meadow and along a serene lake. The trail is relatively flat and easy to navigate, making it a perfect cool-down (or if you go the other direction this might be a great warm up).
Overall, the Monument Peak via Big Laguna, PCT, and Laguna Campground Loop is an excellent hike for anyone looking for a beautiful, challenging, and rewarding adventure. The scenery is breathtaking, and the trail offers a variety of terrain and challenges. Whether you are a seasoned hiker or a beginner, this hike is sure to leave you with memories that will last a lifetime... especially if you take the route through bushes :D
Spots to pay extra attention to (and yes, definitely use navigation):
The junction to Monument Peak (yes, it was a bummer we missed it but we didn't feel like going all the way back either)
The junction to Foster Point (while there is a sign for Foster Point, the trail itself is not quite as straight forward)
Finding the right turn when coming back from Foster Point: we first continued on the PCT until we realized we needed to head back and get off the PCT
The turn shortly after that which is supposed to get you to the Big Laguna Trail: this was the most invisible trail I had ever seen. You essentially just turn off the big trail and hope you are going where you are supposed to go. We used the Alltrails app, and honestly wouldn't have made it without it.
PS: Good company really helps when constantly getting lost and/or fighting through bushes.
